Country and western legend Dolly Parton has written new music for a stage musical based on Nine to Five, the 1980 film comedy, about harassed secretaries who kidnap their chauvinist boss and revolutionise the company, in which she starred alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. However, she's ruled herself out of appearing.

In a radio interview with Go Country 105.1, Parton said: “People ask me if I’m gonna be in the play. I say, ‘No, I think I’m a bit over the age of wanting to be a secretary.” Amongst the new songs she’s written is an autobiographical one titled “Backwoods Barbie”, which “kind of tells my story about always wanting to be pretty and modelling my look after Barbie and the Frederick’s of Hollywood catalogue”.

The stage musical was workshopped by director Joe Mantello in New York this past summer with a company that included The West Wing’s Allison Janney (in the Lily Tomlin role). According to Parton, it will be seen in Los Angeles in autumn 2008 ahead of a Broadway opening in spring 2009. The title song from the film was a hit for Parton and was nominated for both an Oscar and a Grammy. The movie also spawned an American TV series.
