At this week’s press conference to launch the National Theatre’s 2005-6 Annual Report (See News, 12 Sep 2006), artistic director Nicholas Hytner revealed plans to transfer The History Boys to the West End. Commercial producers have been desperate to get their hands on Alan Bennett’s play ever since it premiered, to rave reviews, at the National in May 2004. However, Hytner opted to extend the play’s South Bank run – at length – in order to keep the box office proceeds in NT coffers. Now, even with the transfer, the lion’s share of the profits will still go into NT coffers as the theatre will produce the transfer itself along with National Angels Ltd, an investment scheme set up by NT supporters. The various theatre owners in the West End are still vying for their slice of the pie, though. But where will the Boys be most at home? And when will they move in? That remains to be seen.
