The team behind Monty Python musical Spamalot has come up with a novel way of promoting the show – by unleashing limited edition Spamalot tins of Spam, complete “with stinky French Garlic”, on the nation’s supermarkets to celebrate the show’s West End opening. We’re told that, worldwide, fans of the processed meat open a tin of Spam Chopped Pork and Ham every four seconds, while more than six billion tins have been opened since the product was launched by Hormel Foods in 1936. The Spamtastic tins of the “wickedly smelly” delicacy will be available to buy from large supermarkets to coincide with the opening of the triple Tony Award-winning musical at the West End’ Palace Theatre next month (See News, 26 Jun 2006).
