Great thespians through the ages have been honoured in the new “Avenue of the Stars” outside St Paul’s Church (known as the Actors’ Church) in Covent Garden. The walkway, the UK’s answer to the Hollywood Walk of Fame, honours 100 actors, musicians, comedians and entertainers with plaques, which were unveiled as part of ITV’s 50th anniversary celebrations yesterday (Sunday 18 September 2005). More names will be added each year. Those theatrical types lucky enough to be given stars include Lord Laurence Olivier, Dames Diana Rigg, Maggie Smith, Helen Mirren and Judi Dench, and Sirs John Gielgud, Ian McKellen, Anthony Hopkins, Michael Gambon and Noel Coward, as well as Kenneth Branagh, Alan Bennett and Victoria Wood.
