As widely reported, Mike Leigh’s new play Two Thousand Years sold out its world premiere season at the National before performances even began, but there’s a light at the end of the scheduling tunnel. While the current booking period finishes on 31 January 2006, it’s likely that the production will extend, either in the Cottesloe itself or moving on to one of the National’s larger auditoria. And, even if that doesn’t happen, NT artistic director Nicholas Hytner has confirmed that the production will tour in 2006. As part of the revamped touring remit under Hytner’s regime, the NT has taken some of its hottest tickets out on the road, including Martin McDonagh’s The Pillowman and, setting off this month, Alan Bennett’s The History Boys.
