Although MM Kaye died this past January, at the ripe old age of 95, her passing hasn’t stopped preparations for the stage musical version of one of her best known historical novels. Published in 1978, The Far Pavilions is set in 19th-century colonial India and follows the forbidden romance between a British officer and an Indian princess whose marriage has already been arranged to a tyrannical ruler. In 1984, the story was made into a television mini-series – starring Ben Kingsley, Amy Irving and Christopher Lee – for the American cable channel HBO. The stage musical version has been in development for more than seven years. It features music by Philip Henderson and lyrics by Michael E Ward, who’s also co-producing. It’s currently slated for a West End opening in April 2005.
