At a press conference held yesterday upon publication of the National Theatre's Annual Review (See News, 24 Sep 2003), journalists repeatedly tried to draw comparisons between the buoyancy of the NT, now in the midst of its Travelex £10 Olivier season, and the financial and artistic suffering across the river. How would Hytner rate the current state of the West End? Do commercial producers have something to learn from the NT's new supremo? The man himself refused to take up the critical cudgels. Instead, he answered: "I wouldn't know where to start if I had to make a profit. It's tough for them (West End producers), and I think a lot of the shit that gets thrown at them is unfair."
