Cardboard Starts Homeless Woyzeck at Riverside

By • West End
Cardboard Citizens, the UK's only professional theatre company working with homeless and ex-homeless people, this month launches its new production of Georg Buchner's Woyzeck at London's Riverside Studios, where it runs from 30 September to 11 October ahead of a UK tour - visiting numerous hostels and day centres as well as theatres - up to 30 November 2003.

Written in the 1830s, Woyzeck has been hailed by critics as the first truly modern play. It tells the tragic story of Frankie Woyzeck, an impoverished man who lends his body to medical experimentation and carries out menial jobs for the Army to support his child and girlfriend Marie, who he suspects is having an affair.

Cardboard, which was founded in 1991, made headlines earlier this summer for their staging of Pericles in a co-production with the Royal Shakespeare Company (See News, 10 Jul 2003). Woyzeck continues the company's exploration of the "down-and-outcast" in classic literature and follows earlier productions of The Lower Depths and The Beggar's Opera.

Directed by Cardboard artistic director Adrian Jackson, the Woyzeck cast includes Barry Harrison, Adna Sabljic, Sharon Kirk, Patrick Onione and Lex Macload. The production is designed by Fred Meller, with lighting by Peter Higton and musical direction by David Baird.

Following Riverside Studios, Woyzeck continues to theatres in Hastings, Wakefield, Manchester and Exeter. It will also be performed at various hostels and centres across the country, to include Canterbury, Leatherhead, Liverpool, Warrington, Manchester, Birkenhead, Bristol, Leicester, Peterborough, Guildford, St Albans and London.
