Cameron Mackintosh's successful London production of The Witches of Eastwick is due to open on Broadway early next year. However, it looks certain to involve an all-American cast, opening the possibility of concurrent UK and US versions running. At the same time, rumours abound that Witches will be closing next year at the Prince of Wales Theatre, making way for the Broadway stage version of the hit movie The Full Monty. The Witches of Eastwick opened at Theatre Royal Drury Lane on 24 June 2000, before moving to its present home in March 2001. Ian McShane, who originally starred as the mysterious Darryl Van Horne, retired on health grounds. The story is based on John Updike's novel about three defiantly modern American witches and was also turned into a film in 1987 starring Jack Nicholson and Cher.
