Shunt create labyrinth in Biscuit Factory for new show Architects

Site-specific theatre specialists Shunt will take over a former biscuit factory in Bermondsey for their latest show The Architects, which premieres on 4 December 2012 (previews from 27 November).

According to press material, “In the custard halls of the Biscuit Factory in Bermondsey, the walls are smeared with history: the history of mass producing biscuits. Shunt have taken the extraordinary liberty to extend this history to ancient Greece.”

A modern retelling of the myth of the Minotaur – the fearsome creature with the head of a bull and the body of a man – the show will feature a labyrinth and aim to create a “wildly disorientating” experience.

Past Shunt projects include Money at Bermondsey Street Warehouse, Tropicana and Amato Saltone at London Bridge Vaults, and The Ballad of Bobby Francois and Dance Bear Dance at the Bethnal Green Arches alongside the legendary shunt lounge at London Bridge.

The company have previously been awarded the Total Theatre Award in 2000, the Time Out Live Award in 2003, and the Peter Brook Empty Space Award in 2003 and 2005.

Speaking to the Guardian recently, Shunt founder member David Rosenberg said of their latest project: “We are trying to find ways that audience take on a role within the performance without necessarily having to participate.”

He also confirmed that the company are planning to present more touring work in the future. “For this next period of time we’re going to focus on making work in a variety of different spaces,” he said.

The Architects runs at The Biscuit Factory at 100 Clements Road until 6 January 2013.
