Cheek by Jowl Announces UK Tour of Ford’s ‘Tis Pity

Award-winning theatre company Cheek by Jowl has announced its latest production, a revival of John Ford’s Jacobean tragedy ‘Tis Pity She’s a Whore, which will open in November in Paris before touring the UK next year, including a run at the Barbican from 16 February to 10 March 2012.

The play will be performed by Cheek by Jowl’s English ensemble, which presented Jacobean drama The Changeling in 2006.

‘Tis Pity She’s a Whore centres on a brother and sister whose violent love for each other brings their world crashing down amidst a corrupt Catholic society. According to press material, “Incest, morality, religion and corruption all make this play as shocking and controversial today as it was almost four hundred years ago.”

Cheek by Jowl’s last play was its Russian production of The Tempest, which contiues to tour the world. Since 1981 the company, which is an artistic associate of the Barbican, has toured English, French and Russian language productions to over 300 cities in 40 countries.

After opening in Paris, ‘Tis Pity She’s a Whore will appear at the Sydney Festival and, following its tour of the UK, New York. Full tour and casting is still to be announced.
