Edinburgh Festival Focus

August is here and as the weather (finally) begins to show signs of hotting up, it’s time once again to pack our bags and make the annual pilgrimage to the Scottish capital. We’ll be bringing you all the latest news, reviews and exclusive blogs on our Festival Microsite as well as giving our Top Theatre Video Picks an Edinburgh twist. • Merce Cunningham – In the same month as the dance community mourns the loss of Pina Bausch, it is with great sadness that we lose another inspirational dance figure, Merce Cunningham. Cunningham will be remembered for challenging the expectations associated with dance and pushing the boundaries of collaboration. He sought to bring dance back to ‘movement’ and place focus on the body and quite simply, how it can move. His energy and commitment to the arts was extraordinary and his work will go on to form a huge part in the training of new dancers. Here, he discusses his practice for creating work and why chance came to play such a pivotal role is this process.

  • One week in July 2005… – A year after its Fringe First winning season at the Traverse, Simon Stephens’ startling play Pornography finally receives its London premiere at the Tricycle Theatre, where it runs from the 6 to 29 August (previews from 6 August). Focusing on a seemingly normal week in July of 2005, Pornography captures Britain as it crashes from the buzz of Live 8 and the euphoria and promise of the 2012 Olympics announcement into the devastation of 7/7. Directed by Sean Holmes, new artistic director of the Lyric Hammersmith, Pornography is a gripping account of Britain as it feels the world’s eyes shift from fevered excitement to utter despair in less than an hour.

  • 30, single and singing! Written and performed by Johnny McKnight, Little Johnny’s Big Gay Musical, is on tour throughout Scotland, hitting the Pleasance King Dome for the festival season. Join Little Johnny as he sashays, taps and vogues his way through life’s ups and downs in this feel good, brilliantly comic musical. A welcome relief perhaps from the more experimental work at this year’s festival, Little Johnny will have you high kicking in the aisles, begging for more even as he makes his gold sequined song and dance extravaganza encore!

  • Together…they were saved! Complete with a Georgie, a ‘Ginge’ and a Geek, G3 are bringing their irreverently witty sketch show back to the festival this year. G3 create fast paced sketch shows jam packed with great characters, surrealism, 80’s power ballads and 90’s icons. Featuring Graeme Rooney, Paul Charlton and Kevin O’Loughlin, who between them have a wealth of comedy experience on TV, film and of course theatre, their latest show is sure to be a big hit with the Edinburgh crowds. If you like your comedy with capes, superhero Y-fronts and big belly laughs this is definitely the show for you.
