1st Night Photos: Marshalling Donmar’s Absurdia

Theatre of the absurd was celebrated last night (31 July 2007, previews from 26 July) at the Donmar Warehouse, with the opening of Absurdia, a triple bill of British one-act plays comprising revivals of NF Simpson’s A Resounding Tinkle and Gladly Otherwise as well as the world premiere of Michael Frayn’s The Crimson Hotel (See News, 19 Jun 2007).

Directed by actor-director Douglas Hodge, an associate director at the Donmar, the four-strong cast are Lyndsey Marshal and Peter Capaldi, along with John Hodgkinson and Judith Scott. The production, designed by Vicki Mortimer, continues until 8 September 2007.

Marshal has just been seen on stage opposite Hodge in A Matter of Life and Death at the National, and on screen playing Cleopatra in BBC Two’s Rome. She was last at the Donmar in the 2001 production of David Mamet’s Boston Marriage, which transferred to the West End and won her the Critics’ Circle Award for Most Promising Newcomer. Capaldi is well known from TV’s The Thick of It. His stage credits include Feelgood and The Judas Kiss in the West End.
