1st Night Photos: EastEnders Come West for Brides

Following a regional tour, screen-to-stage musical comedy Seven Brides for Seven Brothers opened last night (16 August 2006, previews from 10 August) at the West End’s Theatre Royal Haymarket for a limited season to 25 November (See News, 13 Apr 2006).

In Oregon circa 1850, Adam goes to town to get a wife. Having convinced Milly to marry him, he brings her back to his backwoods cabin, where she discovers he has six live-in younger brothers who are anxious to get wives of their own. The stage version of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers is based on the 1954 Oscar-winning MGM musical, which starred Howard Keel as Adam and Jane Powell as Milly, the parts taken on stage now by Dave Willetts} and [Shona Lindsay.

For 1st Night Photos, our Whatsonstage.com photographer was on hand for the curtain call and post-show party at the Texas Embassy Cantina, where other guests included EastEnders’ June Brown and Barbara Windsor, Su Pollard (Hi-de-hi), Nicholas Smith (Are You Being Served?), TV presenter Dave Benson-Phillips, Paul Nicholas and fellow musical theatre performers Paul Spicer (Taboo, Notes from New York) and Katherine Kingsley (High Society) as well as members of the company.

Seven Brides for Seven Brothers has a music by Johnny Mercer and Gene de Paul, with additional numbers by Al Kasha and Joel Hirschhorn, and a book by Lawrence Kasha and David S Landay. This stage production is directed by Maurice Lane, choreographed by Adrian Allsopp and designed by Charles Camm, with costumes by Natalie Cole and musical supervision by Gareth Williams. It’s presented by Peter Frosdick and Martin Dodd for UK Productions Ltd.
