After the success of Don Carlos - which transferred from Sheffield to London’s Gielgud Theatre at the start of the year, starring Derek Jacobi and Richard Coyle - we may have another Schiller thriller in the West End soon. There’s strong interest in giving a commercial run to the Donmar Warehouse’s current production of Mary Stuart. Friedrich Schiller’s 1800 romantic tragedy centres on Queen Elizabeth I’s cousin, and rival for the throne, who was imprisoned for 19 years before being executed for treason. In Phyllida Lloyd’s production, which finishes its sell-out season at the Donmar on 3 September 2005, Janet McTeer plays Mary Queen of Scots to Harriet Walter’s Elizabeth (See News, 4 Feb 2005).
