This year's ninth annual Stage Awards for Acting Excellence have opened a casting can of worms (See Today's News). Awards are given in three categories for productions at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe: Best Ensemble, Best Actor and Best Actress. But the last of those has raised concerns amongst those on the judging panel. Thom Dibin, Stage adjudicator and occasional Whatsonstage.com reviewer, told the newspaper: "It is not that there are no good actresses around. It is that this year's Fringe is singularly lacking in good roles for them to get their teeth into. It is a scandal that at the Fringe, where new writing of a high standard is common, actresses, and particularly older actresses, are so poorly served."
