Casting rumours are already rife around Michael Grandage's inaugural season as artistic director of the Donmar Warehouse, (See Today's News). According to American showbiz bible Variety, Francesca Annis is tipped to star in the season opener, Grandage's own production of Noel Coward's 1923 satire, The Vortex, about an aristocratic middle-aged woman, who has an affair with a young man, and her drug addict son. The production opens at the Donmar runs at the Donmar from 5 December 2002 to 15 February 2003. If true, the casting would see Annis treading the London boards at the same time as her real-life partner Ralph Fiennes, who stars in Christopher Hampton's The Talking Cure, opening at the National's Cottesloe on 12 December (previews from 6 December). Also mooted for the cast of The Vortex are Chiwetel Ejiofor and Indira Varma.
