Former world featherweight boxing champion Barry McGuigan has hopes of reaching the West End via a new musical. The show, entitled A Life in the Daze of Stanley Bishop, is playing at this year's Edinburgh Festival and McGuigan is already setting his sights on a London run. The musical may also tour provincially, with McGuigan recently admitting that he could once have opted for showbusiness as a career instead of boxing. In Stanley Bishop, McGuigan plays a boxer whose move to London leads him into a criminal underworld, instead of the sporting fame he eagerly anticipates. McGuigan became the World Boxing Association (WBA) Champion in 1985, and successfully defended his title on two occasions. He now lives in London and has forged a career in television.
