John Kander and Fred Ebb, the music and lyric team behind such greats as Cabaret and Chicago, look set to bring their new show to London next year. Entitled The Visit, the production is due to open at Chicago’s Goodman Theatre in September 2001. Frank Galati will direct, with Broadway star Chita Rivera playing Madame Claire Zachanassian. Angela Lansbury, for whom the show seems to have been written, backed out earlier for family reasons. Rivera trained originally as a ballerina, but opted for a Broadway career that has included leads in West Side Story, The Rink and Jerry’s Girls. The Visit is based on Friedrich Duerrenmatt’s play, about a wealthy woman (Zachanassian) who seeks revenge on a man who wronged her many years before. Excerpts from The Visit suggest a return to the style of Cabaret for Kander and Ebb - one of the few writing acts to emerge from the 1960s who still produce today.
