Musicals Extend: Fiddler & Pre-Opening Dreamcoat

By • West End
Ahead of its official opening night next Tuesday (17 July 2007, previews from 6 July), Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, starring Any Dream Will Do reality TV winner Lee Mead (pictured) in the title role (See News, 11 Jun 2007), has added five months to its booking period in order to meet ticket demand at the West End’s Adelphi Theatre. The box office is now taking bookings through to 7 June 2008.

Joseph started life in 1968 as a 20-minute entertainment for an end-of-term school concert. By the time it received its Broadway premiere in 1982, it had been expanded into a full two-hour show. With music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice, Joseph’s popular score includes the songs "Any Dream Will Do", "Close Every Door to Me", “Go, Go, Go Joseph”, “Those Canaan Days”, “Benjamin Calypso” and "One More Angel in Heaven".

The new staging of the record-breaking 1990s production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at the London Palladium, which was directed by the late Steven Pimlott, will once again be designed by Mark Thompson and choreographed by Anthony Van Laast. In addition to Mead, the cast features Bombay DreamsPreeya Kalidas (as the Narrator), Dean Collinson (as Pharaoh) and Stephen Tate (Jacob/Potiphar/Guru).

Meanwhile, at the Savoy Theatre, having just added five weeks to its schedule (See News, 4 Jul 2007), the Henry Goodman-led revival of Fiddler on the Roof has extended its bookings by another four weeks, taking it up to 1 December 2007.

In Tsarist Russia in 1905, poor dairyman Tevye (Goodman) is doing his best to preserve tradition in the face of a changing world by marrying his daughters off in the traditional Jewish way. But revolution is in the air and the young are guided by their hearts, not their elders. When his daughters refuse the matchmaker's advice and marry for love instead, Tevye must choose between their happiness and his beloved traditions.

The cast also includes Julie Legrand, Victor McGuire and, as Tevye’s wife Golde, Beverley Klein. Also in the Fiddler on the Roof company are: Juliet Alderdice, Natasha Broomfield, Tomm Coles, Steve Fortune, Damian Humbley, Gareth Kennerley, Vincent Pirillo, Alex Ruocco, Alexandra Silber and Frances Thorburn. This new production is directed by Lindsay Posner, designed by Peter McKintosh and features the original choreography of Jerome Robbins (recreated by Sammy Dallas Bates with additions by Kate Flatt).
