1st Night Photos: Bacall Takes Suchet’s Confession

Fresh from the Chichester Festival, and following a brief regional tour, Roger Crane’s new play The Last Confession opened in London last night (2 July 2007) at the Theatre Royal Haymarket, following previews from 28 June. There was considerable Hollywood glitz courtesy of Lauren Bacall, who visited star David Suchet backstage after joining the first night audience.

Based on a real-life incident, the play investigates the mysterious 1978 death of Pope John Paul I, a liberal compromise candidate, known as “the Smiling Pope”, who was found dead just 33 days after taking office. David Suchet, who plays the scheming Cardinal Benelli, is best known to TV fans for his portrayal of Agatha Christie’s Poirot. He was most recently seen in Once in a Lifetime at the National in 2006 and Man and Boy in the West End in 2005.

The production, directed by David Jones, also includes Joseph Mydell and Michael Cronin amongst the cast members. The design was by William Dudley, with costumes by Fotini Dimou, lighting by Peter Mumford and music by Dominic Muldowney. It’s produced by Duncan Weldon, Paul Elliott and Theatre Royal Haymarket Productions.
