Stars from long-running TV soap Coronation Street are heading south to Watford tomorrow (2 July 2005) for one of the opening performances of Get Ken Barlow. The new play – set in Manchester and written by actor Ian Kershaw who has appeared in the soap himself - is about two brothers who decide that a celebrity relaunch is the only way to save their rundown model village. In desperation, they go for the unconventional method of kidnapping the legendary Ken Barlow, the longest-serving character in Coronation Street (played in the soap by William Roache). Corrie cast members due to turn out for tomorrow’s performance at the Watford Palace Theatre include Julie Hesmondhalgh (who plays Hayley in the soap and is also Kershaw’s wife), David Neilson (Roy Cropper) and Susie Blake (Bev Unwin).
