Those who know his work are usually passionate about it, and yet, a Whatsonstage.com Award-winning production of Songs for a New World at the Bridewell Theatre notwithstanding, few of contemporary American composer Jason Robert Brown’s musicals have been seen in this country. A series of concert performances at the New Players in September may whet more producers’ appetites for Robert Brown’s work (See Today’s News). However, even without that, it’s likely we’ll get The Last Five Years within the next 12 months. Brown’s moving two-hander song cycle about a marital breakdown is tipped for a season at the recently opened Menier Theatre in Southwark, south London. Speaking to Whatsonstage.com today, Robert Brown said he was “not optimistic” about the chance of a UK production of his Tony Award-winning Parade. “I would love to see it at the National,” which is the ideal place for “a large, difficult musical”, he said, but sadly “we have not been invited.”
