Preparations are advanced for the premiere of a new revved up, rock 'n' roll version of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Based on a recent hit in France, where several of the songs were released as singles, the reworked musical will have music and lyrics care of Oscar winner Don Black and a book by Opera Factory's David Freeman. Following a fresh round of workshops recently held in London, the £2.5 million show, produced by Adam Kenwright, is gearing up for a West End opening this autumn. Black is best known to theatregoers for his various collaborations with composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, including Song and Dance, Aspects of Love, Sunset Boulevard and the just-opened Bombay Dreams, for which he provided the English lyrics to AR Rahman's Indian music.
