You'd think it be difficult to upstage the casting of Dame Judi Dench in Sir Peter Hall's production of The Royal Family, due to open at the Theatre Royal Haymarket on 1 November (previews from 24 October). But if the current whispers turn out to be true, the result could be nothing less than stunning. Amongst those acclaimed actors who are tipped to be joining the eclectic fictional family, based on the real-life Barrymores of American acting legend, are Toby Stephens (most recently seen in Japes at the Haymarket), Peter Bowles (just in The Beau also at the Haymarket), RSC veteran Philip Voss, Harriet Walter (just seen in Life x 3 at the National and Old Vic) and Celia Imrie (last on stage in 1998's School for Scandal). What a cast for a classic comedy - and certainly one to satisfy anyone disappointed by the unavailability of Sex and the City's Kim Cattrall who was earlier expected to feature.
