1st Night Photos: Kean Folks Celebrate Sher Show

Antony Sher swapped the skin of actor Edmund Kean for formal black at the post-show reception celebrating the opening of Kean on 30 May 2007 (previews from 24 May) at the West End’s Apollo Theatre (See WOS TV, 31 May 2007).

Sher is considered to be one of the country’s leading living Shakespearean actors. In the tragi-comedy, written by Jean-Paul Sartre in 1954 and translated by Frank Hauser, Sher plays legendary 19th-century thespian Edmund Kean who provoked near-rioting with his 1814 performance as Shylock in The Merchant of Venice at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane. The play takes an intimate look at Kean’s private life of drinking, gambling and womanising as well as his ego that some claimed was as big as the stage.
