There’s no better time than tomorrow night for fans of Paulo Coelho to get themselves to north London’s Pleasance Theatre. The Brazilian author has been in the UK promoting his new book, The Zahir, and has added an extra night to his stay so he can catch the first English stage version of The Alchemist, which finishes a six-week season at the Pleasance next week (See News, 1 Apr 2005). The bestseller, first published in Spanish in 1988 and in English in 1993, has been translated into 56 languages and is listed among the BBC’s 100 Big Reads. Will its author approve of the Cornish Theatre Collective’s adaptation?
