Also on the subject of naming, artistic director Mark Rylance was apparently keen to stage this summer’s season at Shakespeare’s Globe – which continues with tomorrow night’s opening of Much Ado About Nothing, joining Romeo and Juliet and, later this month, Measure for Measure in repertory – under the title “Season of Suicide”. Saner heads, who must have thought the title a tad off-putting, prevailed with the consequent alternative of “Season of Star-Crossed Lovers”. However, thematically the link remains. The season is being presented in association with Samaritans, the emotional support charity, which marks its 50th anniversary this year and is best known for its helpline facility for those contemplating suicide (See News, 11 Nov 2003).
