Further to two recent gossip items relating to the Daily Express’ theatre coverage, the newspaper’s critic Sheridan Morley has contacted Whatsonstage.com to clarify his side of the story, which we now happily communicate to you. On the subject of a four-star recommendation for Barbara Cook’s Broadway prior to its opening, which was delayed due to Cook’s poor health (See The Goss, 17 May 2004), Morley writes: “I did not REview Barbara Cook, I was PREviewing her based on many happy evenings seeing her concerts in New York”. And on the subject of his suggestion that a postponed press night signalled on Scamp’s production of Fuddy Meers (See The Goss, 20 May 2004), Morley adds: “I misquoted and immediately corrected a rumour that there was trouble backstage. These things happen.”
