Petherbridge Dashes from Chitty to Pomp Cabaret

By • West End
Edward Petherbridge (pictured), currently appearing as the Toymaker in the musical Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at the London Palladium, will make a swift dash after tonight's performance to perform a special late night cabaret at the fringe Jermyn Street Theatre in St James. From tonight, 12 June 2002, Petherbridge and his wife Emily Richard will present five performances only of Pomp and Force of Circumstance, celebrating the Queen's Golden Jubilee.

In the new show, the couple raid everything from ancient chronicles to tabloid gossip through ravishing poetry and hilarious anecdote - from Canute commanding the waves to Queen Elizabeth II meeting Marilyn Monroe, adding the spice of Jason Carr's original music and performance poetry. They are joined by tap dancer Bret Jones, who will perform a specially commissioned song and dance number, "Mistique".

Petherbridge, who also directs the cabaret, is a stage veteran whose many credits include Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, The Way of the World, Tartuffe, The Merry Wives of Windsor, Cymbeline, Hamlet, Strange Interlude (for which he won an Olivier), Krapp's Last Tape, The Accused and The Relapse.

Richard's stage credits for the Royal Shakespeare Company include Twelfth Night, Three Sisters, Love's Labour's Lost and Macbeth. The couple previously appeared onstage together in the RSC's classic eight-and-a-half hour version of Nicholas Nickleby, for which Petherbridge won a Critics' Circle award.

Pomp and Force of Circumstance plays 12, 13, and 14 June (late night at 11.00pm), and Tuesday 18 and Thursday 20 June (lunchtime at 1.00pm).
