West Yorkshire Playhouse artistic director Jude Kelly has become a more serious contender for the directorship of the National Theatre after confirming her decision to relocate to London. According to The Stage newspaper, Kelly will up sticks from Leeds to London in September. She says that her son, who will start at the Royal Ballet School this year, has prompted the move, but it can't hurt that the South Bank will be so much more accessible, can it? Kelly's WYP production of Singin' in the Rain won an Olivier following its transfer to the National last year, and her name has frequently been included on the rumoured shortlist of candidates to succeed Trevor Nunn whose contract ends in September 2002. In Whatsonstage.com's own recent Big Debate poll on who should get the job, Kelly garnered 9% of the vote, as opposed to the 43% for theatregoers' favourite Stephen Daldry.
