Three big West End musicals - The Beautiful Game, The Witches of Eastwick and Notre Dame de Paris - could all be facing early closures. There have been whispers about severely depleted houses for weeks, and today the Evening Standard has written ominously of the "cash crisis" in theatreland that could take out the trio. The paper attributes the current peril to the strong pound, foot-and-mouth repercussions and a bad international impression of the capital as "dirty and dangerous". London Tourist Board predicts a 14% drop in visitors for 2001. Notre Dame is also facing the loss of its "star" attraction, pop star Dannii Minogue who will leave soon to fulfil recording commitments.
