Daughter beats mother

By • West End
Jennifer Ehle s performance in Tom Stoppard s The Real Thing beat her mother Rosemary Harris to a Tony in New York on Sunday night. “You really can t compete when you re in different plays” she said unconvincingly. Sir Elton John nor Sir Tim Rice were present to see their new but critically unacclaimed production of Aida receive 4 awards including one for Heather Headley as Best Actress in a Musical. Best Musical went to a show with no live music or singing: Contact, whose British choreographer Susan Stroman also picked up an award. Presumably the dance is not on tape. Other British winners were Roy Dotrice for A Moon for the Misbegotten, Stephen Dillane for The Real Thing and Bob Crowley for Best Scenic Design on Aida. Big winner for the night though was Australian born Michael Blakemore who is undeniably this year s best director, having picked up the award for the musical Kiss Me, Kate and Michael Frayn s play Copenhagen.
