Daniel Evans directs Oliver! in Sheffield Crucible for Christmas

Sheffield Theatres will stage a new revival of Lionel Bart’s perennially popular musical Oliver! this Christmas, helmed by artistic director Daniel Evans.

The production opens in the Crucible on 16 December, with previews from 29 November, and
runs until 25 January 2014.

Oliver! is Evans’ third musical for
the company, after last year’s My Fair Lady and Tim Firth’s {This Is My
Family::L341209752}
which opens next month.

Based on the novel by Charles Dickens, Oliver! is the story of an orphan
who runs away from a workhouse and falls in with a gang of boys trained
to be pickpockets by gang leader, Fagin.

The score includes “Food Glorious Food”, “I’d Do Anything”, “As Long As He Needs Me”, “You’ve Got to Pick a Pocket or Two” and “Oom-Pah-Pah”.

Currently in the 980-seat Crucible, which recently had its annual pause in programming for the World Snooker Championships, Michael Longhurst‘s new production of Alan Bennett’s The History Boys starring Matthew Kelly opens on 16 May.
