The winners have been announced of the South Bank Sky Arts Awards, with the Royal Shakespeare Company’s production of Matilda the Musical scooping this year’s Theatre Award.

Matilda, which also triumphed at the recent Olivier and Whatsonstage.com Awards, beat off competition in its category from the National Theatre’s One Man Two Guvnors and Royal Court’s Constellations.

The winners of the 16th South Bank awards were announced at the Dorchester Hotel last night (1 May 2012), with South Bank Show frontman Melvyn Bragg acting as master of ceremonies.

Others who triumphed included BBC drama Sherlock, singer Kate Bush, the ENO’s The Damnation of Faust and writer Michael Frayn.
