The screen-to-stage adaptation of the Irving Berlin musical Top Hat opened in the West End last night (9 May 2012, previews from 19 April) following an extensive regional tour and several weeks of previews at the Aldwych.

Based on the 1935 RKO film of the same name, Top Hat stars Tom Chambers and Summer Strallen in the roles originated on screen by Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. Musical numbers include "Cheek to Cheek" and "Top Hat" and a host of other Irving Berlin classics .

Top Hat is directed by Matthew White and choreographed by Bill Deamer. Special guests on opening night included Irving Berlin's daughters Linda Emmett and Elizabeth Peters, Fred Astaire's daughter Ava Astaire McKenzie as well as: Craig Revel Horwood, Andrew Castle, Nicholas Parsons, David Essex, Michael Winner, Jeffrey Archer, Gethin Jones, Jerry Hall, David Soul, Kerry Ellis, Laura Haddock, John Partridge, Zizi Strallen and Joseph Millson.
