In our latest Whatsonstage.com Radio programme, Roger Foss meets David Soul and Janie Dee, who are currently co-starring as Mack and Mabel at the West End’s Criterion Theatre, and last performed together on the West End stage in Alan Ayckbourn's play Comic Potential.

Hear “I Won't Send Roses” from David Soul's latest EP, and Janie Dee explaining how meeting Harold Pinter helped her with her singing, while Soul recalls how he began his long showbiz career – wearing a mask.

Written by Jerry Herman, and with a score including “I Won't Send Roses”, “Time Heals Everything”, and “Tap Your Troubles Away”, Mack and Mabel tells the story of the tumultuous relationship between silent movie king Mack Sennett, creator of the Keystone Kops, and young comedienne Mabel Normand. This new production, directed by John Doyle and featuring a cast of actor-singers, originated at the Watermill Theatre before a national UK tour and the current West End run.
