Opening: Sunday in the Park, Fair, Treasure Island

Amongst the major shows opening in London this week are:

OPENING TONIGHT, Monday 22 May 2006, Aurelia's Oratorio, a visual feast of stage illusions and fantasy for children and adults presented by Victoria Thierree Chaplin, returns for a second season to 17 June at west London’s Lyric Hammersmith.


OPENING TUESDAY, 23 May 2006 (previews from 13 May), the Menier Chocolate Factory’s production of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s Sunday in the Park with George transfers to the West End’s Wyndham’s Theatre, starring Daniel Evans and Jenna Russell (See News, 10 Feb 2006). Exploring the creative process of French impressionist Georges Seurat, the Pulitzer Prize-winning 1984 musical begins in 19th-century France, where the impoverished painter battles with his art and his personal life. His engrossment in his work drives his pregnant girlfriend Dot to leave him. The action then shifts to modern America where George’s great-grandson is facing similar problems.

OPENING WEDNESDAY, 24 May 2006, Wee Stories’ staging of Robert Louis Stevenson’s epic adventure Treasure Island joins the rep at the Unicorn Theatre for Children in Southwark. Its limited season continues until 10 June 2006.


OPENING THURSDAY, 25 May 2006, (previews from 23 May), Joy Wilkinson’s Fair, tackling racism in Burnley, transfers to the West End’s Trafalgar Studio 2. The play is directed by Helen Eastman and runs until 17 June 2006.


OPENING FRIDAY, 26 May 2006, Nona Sheppard’s new play about civil partnerships, The Marriage Bed, opens at the fringe Drill Hall for a run to 11 June 2006. Valerie gets cold feet on the morning of her marriage to Jennifer.
