Jude Law is tipped to star in a stage version of the cult 1987 film Withnail & I, which starred Richard E Grant and Paul McGann as failing alcoholic actors who retreat to the countryside for a proper ‘rest’. Law is best known for his film roles, including Alfie, Closer and The Aviator. On stage, he has appeared in Dr Faustus and Tis Pity She’s a Whore at the Young Vic. The stage production of Withnail & I is likely to open outside London in spring 2007 before transferring to the West End, and will be produced by HandMade Films, the team behind the screen original, and Laurence Myers. The film also featured Richard Griffiths, currently on Broadway for which he was nominated for a Tony Award yesterday (See News, 16 May 2006) as Uncle Monty. Griffiths’ agent told the Evening Standard newspaper that, although the actor hadn’t yet been approached, he wouldn’t rule it out as a possibility, depending on availability.
