In the Whatsonstage.com office, we’ve had our own first-hand view of the ‘show must go on’ adage this week. Verity Bargate award winner (and Whatsonstage.com business development manager) Matt Charman – whose debut play A Night at the Dogs continues at Soho Theatre until Saturday 14 May (See News, 16 Feb 2005) – took to the stage over the weekend. After the cancellation of two performances, at Saturday evening’s sell-out performance, Charman stepped in to read for an indisposed Joe Armstrong, who plays voice-of-reason Danny in the comedy drama. Armstrong has been recuperating after fracturing three ribs in performance during the course of the run to date - in the second act, his character throws himself repeatedly – and clearly, quite violently -against a locked door. Charman may be reading in again tonight with a replacement (there are no understudies at the 140-seat theatre) possibly taking over from tomorrow, though it’s hoped that Armstrong will return soon. Soho says the company are ‘taking it a day at a time’. We all wish Armstrong a speedy recovery.
