After a long stint in Hell, as Satan in Jerry Springer - the Opera, for which he won last year’s Best Actor Olivier Award, David Bedella will be visiting Heaven in the West End. Heaven, the Gay nightspot that is, where he’ll be taking the title role in a new production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch. The cult musical will run for 13 performances only from 17 June to 1 July 2005 as part of the Gay Pride Festival 2005.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch tells the darkly comic life story of the tortured and obscure Hedwig, a transsexual rock star, as he/she performs a concert with her band, The Angry Inch.

Bedella’s work in the US includes in Jesus Christ Superstar, La Cage Aux Folles, The Rocky Horror Show (with Meat Loaf), West Side Story and A Chorus Line amongst others. He is currently starring in the BBC television drama Holby City.

Premiered in February 1998 at Off-Broadway's Jane Street Theatre, Hedwig and the Angry Inch ran for more than two years and 850 performances in New York, where it won two Obie Awards and an Outer Critics’ Circle Award. The musical received its West End premiere at the Playhouse Theatre in 2000 (See News, 22 Jul 2000). A film adaptation was released in 2001.

The musical has a book by John Cameron Mitchell and music and lyrics by Stephen Trask. The new London production is directed by John Maher and designed by Ben M Rogers, with costumes by Claire Bilyard and sound by Gareth Owen for Orbital.
