Sheridan Morley, newly installed as theatre critic of the Daily Express, has managed the seemingly impossible in his first week on the job: reviewing a show that hasn't happened! Barbara Cook’s Broadway was due to open at the West End’s Gielgud Theatre last Thursday, but owing to a throat infection, all of her London performances have thus far been cancelled (See News, 13 May 2004). That didn't stop Morley on Friday, the day after her non-existent press night, weighing in with a four-star rave, that concluded by saying Cook is one of the reasons "why we go to the theatre: sheer stellar greatness, live and nightly within our grasp. Miss (her) at your peril". Hopefully, theatregoers can stop missing her soon. Though tonight’s performance has also been cancelled, the box office is optimistic that the show truly will go on from tomorrow.
