What's happened to the expected West End transfer of Simply Heavenly (See The Goss, 20 Mar 2003)? Josette Bushell-Mingo's revival of Langston Hughes' 1957 Harlem-based musical comedy opened at the Young Vic back in March. With Hughes' joyful and soulful score and a sublime cast - including Rhashan Stone, Clive Rowe, Ruby Turner and Jason Pennycooke - the show received rave reviews and ecstatic audience acclaim that seemed to ensure its further commercial life. A Young Vic spokeswoman has told Whatsonstage.com that plans have been somewhat delayed due to the director's pregnancy, cast availability and that old chestnut, finding the right venue. It now looks like the musical may return for another limited season at the Young Vic in the autumn, before gearing up again for a possible transfer. West End theatres including the Savoy and The Venue (formerly home of Taboo, both currently dark, have been mentioned as possible eventual homes for Simply Heavenly. The Young Vic has not yet announced its autumn/winter season, but exciting things are apparently afoot, including an all-new Christmas show directed by none other than Trevor Nunn.
