"Crisis" claims Arts Council chief

By • West End
Chairman of the Arts Council of England, Gerry Robinson claimed yesterday that British theatre is in crisis: "Since the mid-eighties, theatre has been inadequately funded. This has drained talent and resources, and made it harder for artists and managers to take creative risks. There are fewer productions and tours, insufficient new work and theatres are carrying a deficit of many millions of pounds." He went on to assert his own organisation s commitment to a set of worthy targets in order to build the bright new future. It remains to be seen whether the resources or the greater collaboration between theatres and funding bodies will be forthcoming.
