Sleeping Beauty is ‘most successful production yet’, says Matthew Bourne

Sleeping Beauty, the last of Tchaikovsky’s ballet trilogy to be directed by Matthew Bourne, has proved the award-winning choreographer’s most successful production to date.

According to figures released by Bourne’s company New Adventures, Sleeping Beauty, which premiered at Sadler’s Wells in December, was seen by over 97,000 during its eight-week run, marking a new record for the venue.

Following its current European tour, it is due to visit the United States in September, playing in Cleveland, New York, Los Angeles and Washington DC.

The production completes Bourne’s interpretations of Tchaikovsky’s three ballets; his interpretations of Nutcracker! and Swan Lake (which famously featured an all-male corps de ballet) were both multi award-winners and big box office hits.

Sleeping Beauty was created as the centre piece of a year long celebration of 25 years of my company,” said Bourne, “and its quality and popularity is a testament to everyone who makes New Adventures what it is today.”
