Among this week's major London theatre openings, in the West End and further afield, are Howard Davies' latest staging of a Russian classic at the National, a 20th anniversary revival of Jonathan Harvey's Beautiful Thing, Swedish drama Doktor Glas and more:

Children of the Sun

Maxim Gorky’s darkly comic play is set in Russia as the country rolls towards revolution. Directed by Howard Davies, it runs at the NT Lyttelton until 14 July 2013.

Beautiful Thing

Jonathan Harvey's 1993 is revived at the Arts Theatre starring Suranne Jones. It runs til 25 May ahead of a national tour.


#aiww: The Arrest of Ai Weiwei
(Previews from 11 April)


Howard Brenton's new play, based on conversations with Ai Weiwei, the Chinese artist who was detained for two months in 2011, premieres at Hampstead Theatre with a run to 18 May. This Friday's performance will be streamed live on the venue's website.

Hjalmer Soderberg's Swedish drama, performed with English surtitles, opens at Wyndham's Theatre starring Wallander's Krister Henriksson in the title role.

Little Bulb's musical re-imagining of the epic Greek myth opens at Battersea Arts Centre's Grand Hall, where it runs to 11 May.
