Headlong stage musical American Psycho as part of new season
Headlong Theatre has announced the five world premiere productions which will make up its season for 2012 and beyond including Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Duncan Sheik‘s musical adaptation of American Psycho.
Based on the 1991 novel by Bret Easton Ellis, American Psycho was adapted for the big screen in 2000 with Christian Bale playing Patrick Bateman.
American Psycho
tells the story a self-possessed serial killer
working on Wall Street in the 1980s. A blackly comic satire of American
corporate greed, it has sold more than 1.6 million copies worldwide. The
film adaptation was a critical success but
commercial failure, grossing just $15 million at the US and Canadian box
office. The film, which has gone on to become a cult classic, was directed by Mary Harron.
Casting for American Psycho is still to be announced.
Tony Award-winning composer Duncan Sheik whose rock musical adaptation of Spring Awakening transferred from Broadway to the West End’s Novello Theatre via the Lyric Hammersmith in 2009 has collaborated with Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark script doctor Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa to adapt the book for the musical stage.
Also part of the Headlong 2012 season is Ella Hicksons‘ latest play Boys which is directed by Robert Icke and co-produced with Southampton’s Nuffield Theatre and HighTide Theatre Festival where the production premieres from 3 to 13 May. The play then travels to Southampton from 16 to 26 May and the Soho Theatre from 29 May to 16 June 2012.
Goold will also return to the National Theatre to direct Lucy Prebble‘s The Effect which goes on sale in June ahead of performances from November 2012 to February 2013.
Mike Bartlett, whose stage adaptation of Chariots of Fire for Hampstead Theatre will transfer to the Gielgud Theatre in June, will create a new version of Euripides’ Medea. The production, which is co-produced by Glasgow Citizens Theatre and Watford Palace Theatre in association with Warwick Arts Centre will tour the UK this autumn.
The final announcement was Headlong’s production of Lucy Kirkwood‘s Chimerica for which more details will be announced shortly.
