While real Hare Krishnas danced at the entrance of the Gielgud Theatre at last night’s gala opening of Hair, they couldn’t compete with the energy exuded by the 26-strong American company, imported lock, stock and barrel from Broadway by impresario Cameron Mackintosh in a West End first.
At the end of the performance, as is the Public Theater production’s tradition, stars
Will Swenson (Berger),
Gavin Creel (Claude) and
Caissie Levy (Sheila) and other members of the hippy Tribe had the audience not only up on their feet but up on the stage with them crooning the “Let the Sun Shine In” finale. Celebrities swept up in the age of “Aquarius” on opening night included Whatsonstage.com Award winner and
Sister Act star
Patina Miller, who appeared in the revival in its initial run in New York’s Central Park in 2007, and
James Rado, ageing hippy and co-writer of the 1967 “American Tribal Love-Rock Musical”.
