If you missed Sir Ian McKellen making his pantomime debut this past Christmas (See News, 6 Oct 2005), don’t worry, you may well have another chance to catch this knight’s dame. Sean Mathias’ production of Aladdin, in which McKellen played Widow Twankey to mixed reviews but sell-out houses, is likely to return to the Old Vic for second seasonal run this December. However, while McKellen is keen to reprise his performance, others in the original cast – which included Roger Allam, Maureen Lipman, Sam Kelly and Joe McFadden – could change. Bille Brown’s new version of Aladdin, commissioned by the Old Vic, is freely adapted from Richard Burton’s translation of Thousand and One Nights. The show also features a song written especially for it by Old Vic trustee Elton John.
