West End affected by Covent Garden power cut
The outage caused today’s matinee of Matilda at the Cambridge Theatre to be cancelled mid-performance, and a member of the box office team confirmed to Whatsonstage.com that this evening’s performance has also been cancelled.
The Donmar Warehouse is also affected and has cancelled tonight’s performance of Trelawny of the Wells. The venue tweeted: “We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience or disappointment and would like to thank our audiences for their understanding.”
Ticket holders are advised to contact their point of sale.
Representatives of Singin’ in the Rain and Jersey Boys have confirmed these shows are unaffected by the outage. The Arts and Noel Coward Theatres are also unaffected, while the Royal Opera House said its power has now been restored.
Shops and offices in Covent Garden were plunged into darkness earlier this afternoon, causing the closure of Covent Garden tube station.
A statement for UK Power Networks reads: “UK Power Networks has restored power to the majority of customers whose properties were affected by a power cut in the Covent Garden area at 4.20pm today.
“A total of 715 power supplies were restored within seven minutes and we are currently working hard to restore power to the final 23 customers. The cause is believed to be a fault on an underground cable and we would like to apologise for the inconvenience caused.”
